Ottawa condemns the deadly truck attack on a Christmas market in Berlin and is in contact with the authorities on the ground, Spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada Diana Khaddaj told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Late on Monday, a truck rammed into a crowd of people at a Christmas market in Berlin, killing at least 12 and injuring almost 50 people. A suspected perpetrator has been detained.

"We condemn what appears to be an appalling terrorist attack, and we offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those killed and a speedy recovery to those injured… The Embassy of Canada in Germany is in communication with local authorities and the Emergency Watch and Response Centre is active and assisting Canadians," Khaddaj stated on Monday.

The spokesperson added that Canadian citizens in Berlin who require emergency consular assistance should contact the Canadian embassy in Berlin, or call Global Affairs Canada’s 24-hour Emergency Watch and Response Centre.

Germany’s Interior minister Thomas de Maiziere said the incident may have been an act of terrorism. A similar conclusion was expressed in a statement by US National Security Council spokesman Ned Price.
