The truck that rammed into a crowd of people in Berlin had a Polish number plate, Berlin police said Tuesday.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — Late on Monday, German police said that at least nine people were killed and 50 injured by the truck ramming attack in Berlin. A suspected perpetrator who drove the vehicle has been detained while another person was found dead inside the truck.

"The truck has Polish numbers, but the driver's nationality has not yet been determined," a police representative told reports.

The nationality of the person found dead has also not yet been determined, the representative added.

Meanwhile, Polish media reported that the truck belonged to a local transport company owned by Ariel Zurawski. Zurawski told the Wirtualna Polska website that the man driving the vehicle was not a company employee, adding that the man killed was likely his relative who worked for the company.

Zurawski also told TVP Info television that contact with the driver was lost earlier in the day while the vehicle passed through a predominantly Muslim area.

German media reported, citing security sources, that the man driving the vehicle may have been a Pakistani or Afghan national. German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said the incident could be an act of terrorism.
