Spanish Pacifists Thank Russian Diplomats for 'Invaluable Aid' for Syria

The Global Platform Against War expressed solidarity with the Syrian people, their legitimate government and Russia that "had the courage to help."

MADRID (Sputnik) – About 20 activists of the Global Platform Against War gathered near the Russian embassy in Madrid in order to submit to Russian diplomats a letter with gratitude for Russia's actions in Syria and support for Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"We know that the end of the war is coming due to resistance of the Syrian people and invaluable Russian aid. That is why we want to express gratitude on behalf of those, who really wants peace," organization’s spokeswoman Susana Oviedo said.

In the submitted letter, the Global Platform Against War expressed solidarity with the Syrian people, their legitimate government and Russia that "had the courage to help."

"Today almost six years after eruption of the Syrian war when an anticipation of the end of the conflict finally emerged, we must openly demonstrate our solidarity with those makes it possible: the Syrian people, Russia and brother anti-imperialistic countries," the letter read.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting the Syrian opposition groups striving to overthrow Assad. Damascus is also fighting numerous extremist and terrorist groups such as the Jabhat Fatah al Sham (previously known as al-Nusra Front) and Daesh, both outlawed in Russia. According to the United Nations, 300,000 Syrians died since the beginning of the conflict.

Russia launched military operation against terrorist groups in Syria in September 2015, at the request of legitimate Syrian President Bashar Assad.
