Leader of the Scottish Labour Party Kezia Dugdale proposed on Wednesday to introduce a new political settlement, possibly a federal state, to consolidate the United Kingdom in the wake of the Brexit decision.

Vote Against Gov't Brexit Plan Attempt to Thwart UK's EU Referendum
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Dugdale noted that devolution had been beneficial for the various UK nations, but the unity was still necessary and called for a new Act of Union that would bring UK regions closer.

"This would mean a radical reshaping of our country along federal lines where every component part of the United Kingdom – Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the English regions – take more responsibility for what happens in their own communities, but where we still maintain the protection of being part of a greater whole as the UK," Dugdale said at the Institute for Public Policy Research in London, as quoted by The Guardian newspaper.

On June 23, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. While English voters largely backed leaving the bloc, voters in Scotland and Northern Ireland mostly voted "remain."

Following the referendum, Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that Scotland would consider taking a vote on independence one more time after the September 2014 referendum, claiming that the Brexit referendum outcome neglected Scotland’s willingness to stay in the European Union.
