The situation of summer 2015 when thousands of migrants flooded Germany should not and will not take place again, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — According to German Interior Ministry, some 890,000 migrants arrived in Germany in 2015.

"The situation with the arrival of refugees in Germany, as it was in the summer of 2015, cannot, must not and will not be repeated," Merkel said speaking at the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party conference.

She added that "it has been and remains my political goal."

Europe is currently facing a major refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of migrants attempting to reach deemed wealthy EU member states through various routes, including via Italy, Greece, Turkey and Balkan states. Despite Brussels' efforts to curb the migration influx, many people still continue to attempt to reach the European Union.
