MOSCOW (Sputnik) — He stressed that both sides “had come very close to this” and that the cooperation would have “a significant impact on stability of this region.”

“We believe that today Azerbaijan is a security outpost in the Caspian region. So we need to cooperate in this area more effectively,” Shoigu said during a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart Zakir Hasanov.

In 2003, Moscow and Baku signed an agreement on the defense industry cooperation. The relations continued to develop further, marked by regular meetings of defense officials, particularly on the ministerial level, as well as intelligence, border and anti-terrorism cooperation.
