MOSCOW (Sputnik) A total of 77 of the 152 local authorities responsible for providing care for the elderly have seen at least one residential and nursing care provider closure over the period, according to figures obtained by The Observer.

The figures revealed that 59 councils have had to find new care arrangements after providers were unable to fulfill their contracts and continue operating due to insufficient government funding.

In addition, 48 councils, reported at least one company that provides care for the elderly in their own homes has ceased trading over the same period.

In a letter to the paper, local government political groups stated that "the social care crisis is real and it is happening right now. The Government cannot ignore it any longer if we are to truly have a society that works for everyone." The letter added that there was a 2.6 billion pounds ($3.25 billion) funding gap, which needed to be filled to ensure adequate standards of social care.

In the government's autumn statement, Chancellor Philip Hammond stated that the opposition's allegations of a social care crisis were unwarranted and that the current government was to deliver up to 3.5 billion pounds a year of additional funding to the social care system.
