Three German nationals have been detained by local police over their alleged ties to the Ahrar ash-Sham jihadist group operating in Syria, the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe said on Tuesday cited by local media.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Spiegel magazine, three German citizens of Syrian origin from Bavaria, Berlin and Lower Saxony are suspected of financing the militants and supplying them with equipment.

The detainees will reportedly face trial on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Ahrar ash-Sham, a jihadist group outlawed in Russia, seeks to establish Daesh in Syria. According to various estimates, up to 20,000 fighters take part in its military operations against the Syrian government.
