WARSAW (Sputnik) — It would be most beneficial for Poland if German Chancellor Angela Merkel stayed in office after the 2017 elections, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said Friday.
The Germans will vote in the federal election in 2017. Following the results of the vote, either a new chancellor will be chosen, or Merkel will stay in power.
"Of the German politicians at the moment… the most helpful for us would be if madam chancellor stayed in power, as she is fighting for Europe's interests and takes Poland's interests into account," Waszczykowski told Polskie Radio.
He also reminded that the matter of German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier being potentially replaced by European Parliament President Martin Schulz, who had been reportedly critical of Poland's policy, had not been decided yet.
