UK Labour Party Leader Urges Gov't to Consult Parliament on Brexit Talks

UK Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn has called on the government to urgently consult lawmakers on its negotiating terms for the country's withdrawal from the European Union, the leader's office announced on Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, the High Court ruled that the United Kingdom cannot trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty without British lawmakers' approval. The UK government is expected to appeal to the Supreme Court following the ruling.

“This ruling underlines the need for the Government to bring its negotiating terms to parliament without delay…  there must be transparency and accountability to parliament on the terms of Brexit," Corbyn said in a statement.

Corbyn added that the Labour Party supports the public vote regarding membership of the European Union and will seek to achieve a Brexit that benefits employment, living standards and the UK economy.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May previously stated she intends to trigger Article 50 at the end of March 2017.

On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the 28-nation bloc. According to the final results, some 52 percent of voters decided to support Brexit.
