The United Kingdom will allocate up to 36 million pounds ($44 million) to ensure the safe closure of the Calais migrant camp and the implementation of the related procedures, UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd said on Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier on Monday, French authorities started to dismantle Calais camp in northern France relocating migrants to other facilities across the country with some minors due to be sent to the United Kingdom.

"The UK government will be contributing up to £36 million to maintain the security of these controls, to support the camp clearance and to ensure in the long term that the camp is kept closed. This funding will also be used to help keep children safe in France. This contribution is not made unconditionally, and we will continue to work with the French government to ensure that the clearance operation is full and lasting," Rudd said while speaking to the parliament.

The plans to fully dismantle the makeshift camp were announced by French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve in early September. Earlier this month, Cazeneuve called on the UK government to reunite migrant children from the Calais camp with their families in the United Kingdom.

According to Rudd, the United Kingdom have transferred about 200 children from Calais, including at least 60 girls, "many of whom had been identified as at high risk of sexual exploitation."

Since 2015, Calais has been the home to a large migrant camp – the so-called Jungle – notorious for its horrible living conditions. Thousands of migrants from the Middle East and North Africa are living in the Jungle, located not far from the Channel Tunnel, in hopes of reaching the United Kingdom. The number of people living in the Calais camp are estimated to reach some 8,000.
