EDINBURGH (Sputnik) – Steven Woolfe, a frontrunner in the party’s leadership contest, reportedly collapsed after receiving a head injury during an altercation with another UKIP member at a heated meeting at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.

"Steven and I are very close friends. I am shocked by the news, I wish him a speedy recovery and my thoughts are with his family," Coburn, who is also a member of the European Parliament, said.

In a formal statement issued to media, interim UKIP leader Nigel Farage said that the 49-year-old had been taken to hospital in a serious condition.

The development follows a turbulent week for the right-wing party after newly elected leader Diane James resigned Tuesday, just 18 days after being elected following Farage’s decision to stand down following June’s UK referendum on EU membership.
