The United Kingdom will continue opposing the plans for the EU army as it would make NATO less effective, Defense Secretary Michael Fallon said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — At a summit of defense ministers in Bratislava, Fallon said:

"We will go on blocking a[n] EU army that would simply undermine NATO."

Fallon stressed that the Conservative Party would maintain and even increase UK defense budget, keeping it the largest in Europe.

The United Kingdom's decision to exit the European Union has revived the talks on merging the existing defense structures of the EU member states into a single army. The European Union encourages military cooperation between member countries, which already run joint operations.
