More power came from sunlight than from coal over the last six months as solar power becomes the "new normal."

It's official, solar power generated more electricity than coal over the last six months in a historic year for energy in Britain.

A report by Carbon Brief has found that solar power generated nearly 7,000 GW (gigawatt) between April and September, which was 10 percent more than coal did during the same period.

Environmentalists and campaigners for better sources of energy will be pleased at this dramatic turnaround.

Wind Turbine - Sputnik International
Wind-Wind Situation for Scotland as It Powers Entire Nation for a Day
This great news follows on from Scotland's initiative in August, where they used wind turbines to pump enough electricity to power the nation's homes and businesses for the first time on record.

In 2015, solar capacity doubled, but at the same time it was also hit hard by government funding cuts.

James Court, head of policy at the Renewable Energy Association said that this new development would have been thought unthinkable five years ago.

"This new data shows its popularity amongst homeowners and businesses and its falling costs. Now that we have a significant global and domestic industry, solar is one of the cheapest forms of power," Mr. Court told The Independent.

So it's official, the UK is drawing closer to clean technology and bidding farewell to coal. The transition to a renewable future is within Britain's grasp.
