MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On September 20, work began to construct a 13-foot-high wall to block migrants to enter Calais port from the nearby migrant camp. Later in the month, Bouchart said that she could stop the construction.

"According to what I said in a press release on September 23, and in the absence of a satisfactory response from Société d’Exploitation des Ports du Détroit [the company that operates the port] I took a decree interrupting the construction works of the wall near the port bypass," Bouchart said on her Twitter account.

She added that it was found that the construction was started on the municipal land without receiving an approval of local authorities.

Europe has been beset by a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing their crisis-torn home countries in the Middle East and North Africa to escape violence and poverty.

The Calais refugee camp is currently home to thousands of migrants who are staying in northern France in the hope of crossing to the United Kingdom.

London planned to build a 13-foot-high wall along the beltway leading to the port to stop migrants attempting to reach the because of family ties, language and job opportunities there.
