The European Union has ambitious plans for economic development after the United Kingdom leaves the bloc, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — The United Kingdom held a referendum on June 23, where the majority of voters chose to leave the European Union. Britain has not begun the official exit procedure so far as it still has not triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.

"We would like to stress…that we are resolved to continue economic development benefiting people in our countries and their jobs by efforts of 27 member states, and we have ambitious plans to do it," Merkel said ahead of the working meeting with French President Francois Hollande and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Merkel added that Berlin would push for overhaul of the EU legislation on digitization.
