Snowden, who had leaked the details about NSA global surveillance operations to the press, subsequently fleeing the United States and receiving asylum in Russia, was invited to the PEN International ceremony in Norway to accept an award. His lawyers appealed to a Norwegian court for a ruling to prevent the authorities from extraditing Snowden to the United States.

The PEN, an international association of writers, poets and journalists, awarded Snowden Ossietzky Prize for freedom of expression contribution.

In the United States, Snowden faces charges of espionage for leaking the sensitive documents.
