The Moldovan Party of Socialists is going to initiate a no-confidence vote against the government of the country, the party’s leader, Igor Dodon, said Monday.

CHISINAU (Sputnik) — In June, the Socialists said that they would initiate no-confidence votes to ministers every week. They have already initiated such motions against the defense minister, the minister of education and the finance minister of the country.

"I announce that we will initiate a no-confidence motion against the government. We should prevent another theft from the banking and financial sector… We have no money for pensions, salaries and scholarships. The Party of Socialists calls on all the parliamentarians to sign the no-confidence motion against the government regardless of their political ideology and geopolitical views," Dodon told reporters.

The no-confidence motion initiatives come following popular protests in 2015 demanding the resignation of the Moldovan government and other country's high-ranking officials, as well as calling for early parliamentary elections and action on corruption.

Political crisis in Moldova was sparked by the biggest known incident of fraud in Moldovan history, namely, the disappearance of over $1 billion, or the equivalent of about 15 percent of the country's gross domestic product, from three Moldovan banks. The incident negatively affected the country's banking system and led to a depreciation of the national currency, the leu.
