"The most urgent task of the government is to remove the camp in Calais and provide shelter for refugees," Hollande was quoted as saying by the palace during his visit to the French city of Tours.
The president called the conditions in the camp "unacceptable" for living. He suggested relocating refugees from the "jungle" to other reception centers across the country.
Hollande is expected to visit Calais on Monday.
The number of people living in the "jungle" camp are estimated to reach as many as 9,000. The camp is seen as a gateway to the United Kingdom by thousands of undocumented migrants. French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve is said to have ordered the demolition of the northern part of the camp. In March, the French authorities almost dismantled the southern part of the Calais migrant camp.
