UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – Germany will seek a non-permanent member status in the UN Security Council for 2019-2020, the country’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said.
"The United Nations provides us with [a] global framework of rules and instruments to address our common challenges and get together. And I believe that in these crisis-ridden times international cooperation is more important than ever. That's why I'm glad to officially launch our candidacy for a non-permanent seat to the UN Security Council for 2019-2020," Steinmeier announced on Wednesday.
The last time that Germany was elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council was for the years of 2011-2012. Non-permanent members are elected for two-year terms.
The permanent members of the Council include Russia, the United States, China, France and the United Kingdom.
