EU Parliament Ready to Assist Ukraine in Holding Donbas Elections Safely

The European Parliament is ready to provide Ukraine with necessary assistance during local elections in Ukraine's eastern region of Donbas.

OSCE Sees Decrease of Hostilities in Eastern Ukraine
KIEV (Sputnik) — The European Parliament is ready to provide Ukraine with necessary assistance to ensure safety during the potential local elections in Ukraine's eastern region of Donbas, the chair of the delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee said Wednesday.

"We are also ready to provide any help, any support, including in cooperation with the OSCE [The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe], to ensure that if these elections are held, they will take place in an absolutely safe environment," Andrej Plenkovic said at a meeting of the European Parliament lawmakers with Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman.

He added that the European Parliament was also ready to contribute to safety of all the participants of the elections.

Kiev launched a special military operation in Ukraine’s southeast in April 2014, after local residents refused to recognize the new Ukrainian authorities, which came to power as a result of what many considered to be a coup.

In February 2015, a peace agreement was signed between Ukraine’s conflicting sides in Minsk. The law on holding elections in the breakaway eastern Ukrainian regions was one of the cornerstones of the Minsk deal, which was agreed by Germany, Russia, France and Ukraine.
