Britain Says 'Cheerio' to EU (463)

If Brussels offers a "palatable" pack of measures to London, the United Kingdom may reconsider its Brexit decision, the speaker of the lower house of the Irish parliament told Sputnik.

STRASBOURG (Sputnik) — Both the UK government and its people may reconsider the decision to leave the European Union once the bloc offers the United Kingdom its deal on Brexit, the speaker of the lower house of Ireland’s parliament told Sputnik Friday.

"When I mentioned earlier the fact that it [Brexit] might be revisited by the British government or the British people… I think it is something that may well be focused upon when eventually the British government in the negotiations in the European Union get to a point where a package of measures are on offer from Europe, and a lot will depend on how palatable and how acceptable those measures are for the British government and the British people," Sean O Fearghail said.

He added that the Brits do not know how or when they would leave the European Union.

The United Kingdom held a referendum on June 23, where the majority of voters chose to leave the European Union. Britain has not triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty yet, a formality needed to start talks on conditions for the country's withdrawal from the bloc.
