The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has banned Russian athletes from participating in the Paralympic Games. Dr. Andre Hahn, a representative of Germany's left-wing party Die Linke who is an expert on sports policy, shared his opinion on the decision in an interview with Sputnik.

The German Paralympic team is winning one medal after another in Rio de Janeiro. Of course, Dr. Hahn is pleased when German athletes perform successfully. "But the discussions about doping, protracted for months, have cast a shadow on the Games," he said.

"It's wrong when the world's best athletes cannot participate, because the whole nation is not allowed to," the politician told Sputnik. "It is a distortion of the spirit of the competition."

Dr. Hahn is firm in his commitment to drug-free sports: "I always said that those who take drugs should be disqualified." This also applies to coaches and doctors participating in a scandal. On the other hand, there should not be a collective responsibility: "That is why I agreed the IOC was correct in deciding to conduct individual testing and let the sport unions do it. It was a deliberate decision," explained the Bundestag deputy.

Dr. Hahn was extremely surprised when Russia was disqualified by the IPC. "Athletes with disabilities are being punished for others' transgressions — I think it's wrong!" he claimed, arguing that an offender should be dismissed, but not the entire country.

In addition, the behavior of IPC President Sir Philip Craven, who is also an IOC member, seemed out of place to the MP: "In the IOC, he voted for the individual tests and against the exclusion of Russia from participation in the Olympics. In his own committee, he offered to disqualify the entire Russian team." Dr. Hahn added insisted that he could not wrap his head around this fact.

In his opinion, the move was clearly politically motivated:

"I remember well, when German and American cyclists (among them the winners of stages and the whole tour) were discharged in large numbers during the Tour de France, because they were all taking dope. Nobody asked for all the German and the American cyclists to be banned from participating in the world championships, or that the countries' teams be removed from the Olympic Games," Dr. Hahn said.

"All this has no place in sport," the expert concluded.
