Slovak non-governmental organization Globsec Policy Institute published a public opinion poll concerning support for membership in the European Union (EU) and NATO among Slovaks, Hungarians and Czechs.

According to the survey, the lowest level of public support for the country's membership in the EU was identified in the Czech Republic. Only 32 percent of Czechs positively evaluated their country's membership in the EU.

In Slovakia and Hungary, over 50 percent supported membership in the EU. Negative attitude stowards the EU were estimated at 24 percent of Czech respondents as opposed to 14 percent in Slovakia and 8 percent in Hungary.

As for NATO membership, among these three states, the strongest support was found in Hungary with 47 percent of the total vote. The Czech Republic came second with 44 percent, while the lowest level of support for NATO membership was in Slovakia with only 30 percent.

“The Czech Republic is presumable the most Eurosceptic country out of all three, which took the survey. Meanwhile, Czechs support the pro-Western orientation and the majority positively evaluates the republic’s membership in NATO,” Echo24.cz quoted the project’s authors.

In fact, some respondents support the pro-Russian orientation of their countries. A majority of Czechs and Slovaks negatively evaluated the role of the United States in Europe, while Hungarians remained in a minority with 39 percent.

According to the survey’ authors, the reason behind people’s attitude towards the EU and NATO might be influenced by “alternative media," different from the “traditional." However, the study shows that the majority in the above mentioned countries trust alternative sources.
