"Marina Kaljurand has informed me of her decision to stand in the presidential elections. Though the participation of several like-minded candidates in the elections will reduce their chances of victory, this is Kaljurand's personal decision and her constitutional right," the prime minister said, as quoted in the statement.
Roivase also confirmed that his Reform party, which is the country's ruling party, would support the candidacy of former Vice President of the European Commission Siim Kallas.
"Kaljurand expressed her desire to resign to participate in the presidential race, but I do not think it [resignation] is necessary and asked her to think it over," he added.
Estonian lawmakers have recently failed to elect a head of state in the presidential runoffs, which took place on August 29-30, after neither of the three candidates, including Kallas, Former Education Minister Mailis Reps and former Chancellor of Justice Allar Joks gained the necessary number of votes.
