Poland to Spend $377,000 on Removing Soviet War Memorials
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Moscow demands to bring to justice those responsible for vandalizing several graves of Soviet soldiers at a memorial cemetery in the Polish city of Poznan and stresses the need to preserve memorial sites, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Thursday.

"We demand the elimination of consequences of the act of hooliganism, identifying and bringing the guilty to justice. We insist on the unconditional observance by the Polish side of the Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Poland on Burials and Memorial Sites for War and Repression Victims as of February 22, 1994 and the part of the Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Polish Republic on Friendship and Cooperation as for May 22, 1992, related to the protection of memorial sites," Zakharova told journalists.

The incident indicates that the Polish authorities turn a deaf ear to the calls to adopt preventive measures against the instances of abuse of the graves of Soviet soldiers, the spokeswoman added.

On Monday, the unknown have also damaged a number of commemorative plaques, as well as funeral photos of the buried soldiers. Almost 6,000 Soviet soldiers were buried at the affected cemetery.

The Park Cytadela is a historical monument, the city park, which hosts a military museum, military cemeteries, and the remains of some of the fortifications. The soldiers and prisoners-of-war of both WWI and WWII were buried there. There are Polish and Soviet cemeteries on the slope.
