British railway conductors started a two-day strike on Wednesday to protest against planned job cuts, according to UK National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT).

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The dispute arose after the Southern Railway's operator Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) announced plans to scrap the role of conductors, who are currently responsible for passenger health and safety on its trains, transferring their duties to train drivers.

"Reports from all locations this morning confirm that the strike action is rock solid and determined again across the Southern Rail network as we fight to put rail safety and access before the profits of the failed Govia Thameslink operation," RMT General Secretary Misk Cash was quoted as saying in the RMT statement.

Cash added that disability campaigners were expected to join the rally.
