A 30-year-old British serviceman was arrested on suspicion of terrorism offenses.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A member of the British Armed Forces was arrested in the English county of Somerset on Wednesday on suspicion of preparations of acts of terrorism, London police said in a press release.

"A 30-year-old man has been arrested in Somerset on suspicion of terrorism offences… Today’s arrest was pre-planned and intelligence-led as part of an investigation into Northern Ireland related terrorism," the press release read.

According to the statement, searches are being conducted in south Devon as part of the inquiry.

Police added that "there is no intelligence to suggest an immediate threat to our communities."

In May, UK security service MI5 brought the threat level from Northern Ireland-based separatists in Great Britain up a notch from "moderate" to "substantial."

In Northern Ireland, the level of terrorist threat remains at "severe," which means an attack is highly likely.
