Estonia’s Ministry of Social Affairs plans to introduce a fine for smoking in vehicles in the presence of minors, local media report.

TALLINN (Sputnik) – Smoking of tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, in cars in the presence of at least one minor would lead to a fine of 800 euros ($892 at the current exchange rate), according to the Estonian ERR broadcaster.

The ministry explains that the new measure is prompted by research, which suggests that the amount of harmful substances inhaled during passive smoking is greater in vehicles than it is in living spaces.

The ban on smoking in the presence of minors will not apply to open-air vehicles and cars with a completely open top.

The fine will be paid by the driver, even if the person smoking is not the one driving the car.
