The petition urging the UK parliament to hold former Prime Minister Tony Blair accountable for Britain's involvement in the Iraq War has gathered 10,000 signatories requiring a response from the government.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The petition urging the UK parliament to hold former Prime Minister Tony Blair accountable for the country's engagement in the Iraq War reached the first milestone of 10,000 signatories on Monday, requiring a formal response from the government.

"The Chilcot Report has presented a range of evidence that demonstrates that Parliament and the country were misled by Tony Blair in the run up to the war in Iraq. Parliament should now agree a process by which it can hold the former Prime Minister to account," the petition posted on the UK government website reads.

The report by Sir John Chilcot on the UK role in the Iraq War, released earlier in July, found that the UK government under the leadership of then-Prime Minister Tony Blair made a mistake by invading Iraq in 2003, as the decision to join the war was taken on the basis of flawed intelligence data and assessments.

According to the Party of Wales, its member Adam Price, who instigated the petition, expects it to pass the 100,000 target required to initiate a debate in the House of Commons.
