Belgian police have a suspected man "under control" on a central square in Brussels, a police spokeswoman told Belgian media on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier, media reports said a police operation was underway in the Belgian capital. There have recently been a number of police raids and arrests in connection with possible terrorist threats

Brussels police spokeswoman Ilse Van de Keere told Belgium’s Le Soir newspaper that a "suspicious situation" had unfolded at Place de la Monnaie, prompting police to intervene.

A security officer reportedly alerted police after spotting a suspicious man in a long coat with protruding wires visible underneath. The suspect has not been arrested but police reportedly have the situation under control.

A security perimeter was set up and part of the square, a nearby library and several shops were evacuated amid the ongoing operation.
