DONETSK (Sputnik) — At least three people were killed and four sustained injuries in the last 24 hours when the Donetsk region of Ukraine was shelled by Kiev forces, the deputy defense minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic's (DPR), Eduard Basurin, said Wednesday.
"As a result of the shelling of Donetsk units, two servicemen were killed and two others — injured. Civilians were among the victims of the mortar fire by the Ukrainian Armed Forces as well. In Staromykhailivka, a civilian died," Basurin told reporters.
He noted that Donetsk militia had informed the OSCE mission in Ukraine about the attacks by Kiev.
Ukraine launched a military operation in the country's southeast in April 2014, after local residents refused to recognize the new government in Kiev that they viewed as illegitimate. After a peace accord was reached between the sides to the conflict in Minsk in February 2015, the OSCE was tasked with monitoring the implementation of the provisions of the deal.
