French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said that French security forces carried a total of 1,555 arrests, 64 deportation measures and 32 refusal to access during the month of the UEFA Euro 2016 football championship.

PARIS (Sputnik) – Over 1,500 arrests and 60 deportations have been made in the month of the UEFA Euro 2016 football championship, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Monday, describing the tournament as largely successful despite the terrorist threat facing the country.

"In one month, security forces carried a total of 1,555 arrests… 64 deportation measures and 32 refusal to access," Cazeneuve said at a briefing.

He praised law enforcement officers of working to prevent or suppress riots during the June 10-July 10 competition.

According to the minister, the deportations of Russian football fans allowed to prevent "unacceptable disturbances" like those which took place on June 11 following the Russia-England match.

France is hosting the Euro 2016 football championship, which started on June 10 and ended on July 10 with Portugal winning the tournament.

On June 14, French police blocked Russian football supporters in a bus on their way to the city of Lille, where the Russian national team was set to play against Slovakia. The Russian fans were accused of participating in clashes with English fans at the stadium in the port town of Marseille on June 11. The supporters were transferred to Marseille. Later French police released 20 people and placed other 20 in deportation center, where it was decided to deport them from the country.
