UK Home Secretary Theresa May leads in the second round of the race for the ruling Conservative Party leadership and the prime ministerial post, Conservative Party officials said Thursday.

LONDON (Sputnik) – With 46 votes to May’s 199 and Leadsom’s 84, Gove’s exit guarantees that the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom will be a woman.

UK Justice Secretary Michael Gove was eliminated from the ruling Conservative Party leadership race.

All 150,000 Tory party members will vote to elect their next leader by mail until September, following this week's two-round elimination process among lawmakers.

Prime Minister David Cameron announced after a shock June 23 referendum to leave the European Union that he would step down this fall.
