The head of the UK delegation to the OSCE PA told Sputnik that Britons' decision to leave the EU was "terrible."

TBILISI (Sputnik) — The decision of the United Kingdom to leave the European Union was a "terrible" choice that is likely to unpredictably affect both London and the remaining EU member states, the head of the UK delegation to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA) told Sputnik on Friday.

"I think it was a terrible decision and I regret it very much indeed. I am very fearful of the effects that we would have on the United Kingdom and on the 27 members of the European Union. I have no doubt that the other 27 members of the EU will, however, want to do everything to ensure the European Union continues. I am just very sorry we won't be a part of it," Lord Peter Bowness said on the sidelines of the 25th annual OSCE PA session that kicked off earlier in the day in Tbilisi, Georgia.

When asked when the United Kingdom would follow through on the vote to actually leave the European Union, the lawmaker noted that the formal procedures of Brexit would be a matter for whoever becomes the next prime minister.

"We won't have a new prime minister for some little time and I believe the date, which was looked at yesterday is September 2," Bowness noted.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron, who led the Remain campaign in the country’s vote on leaving or staying in the European Union, announced his resignation after the nation decided to leave the bloc in a referendum on June 23. He is expected to step down in October, while the new prime minister is set to be elected in September.
