Brexit made the future of some 1,200 British officials in the European Commission unclear despite President Jean-Claude Juncker's promise to fight for their jobs, a source said.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — The future of approximately 1,200 British officials in the European Commission is unclear following the UK decision to leave the bloc, a source in the European Parliament told RIA Novosti Wednesday.

"Despite [European Commission President Jean-Claude] Juncker's assurances, the future of British officials has become unclear. Anyway, following the results of the UK referendum, they have lost prospects for promotion," the source said.

UK Trade Ties, Including TTIP, Likely to Remain Unchanged After Brexit
After the results of the UK referendum were announced, Juncker reportedly wrote a letter to the UK employees in the main European institutions promising to fight for their jobs.

According to Article 28 of the EU Commission's staff regulations, an official may be appointed to the organization only if "he is a national of one of the Member States of the Communities, unless an exception is authorised by the appointing authority."

On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.
