European Union single market applicants must respect other basic EU rules, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Countries that want to have access to the European single market must respect other basic EU rules, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday referring to the UK decision to leave the bloc.

"One, who wants to have free access to the European single market, must in turn accept basic European freedoms and other rules and obligations," Merkel said in an address to the German parliament.

On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.
