Russian journalists detained by the French police in Lille as they were covering football clashes between English and Russian fans in the city, were released shortly after detention, media reported Wednesday.

Russian Journalists Detained During Coverage of Lille Football Clashes
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — "Police detained [the journalists] without explanation, the journalists' accreditation was confiscated. In 20 minutes, the Russian journalists were released," the news portal Championat.com said, noting that its reporter was among the detained.

The French city of Lille is due to host a Russia-Slovakia football match later on Wednesday within the framework of the UEFA Euro 2016. On Tuesday, England and Wales fans clashed with Russian fans in Lille, but French police intervened with pepper spray, and detained several individuals.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Russian Izvestia newspaper reported that officers of the French gendarmerie in Lille had surrounded the representatives of the Russian media, who were covering the clashes, took way their accreditation and started to check their documents.
