An English team supporter sustained a critical head injury and is in 'critical condition', UK media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — An English football fan sustained a critical head injury and is fighting for his life after scuffles among football fans in Marseille went terribly wrong, UK media reported.

The 51-year-old man was purportedly attacked by unidentified Russian hooligans, the Independent newspaper said, citing witness reports.

Reports on nationalities of those caught up in the fresh bout of violence on Marseille streets could not be independently verified, with the outlet saying English, Russian and French fans could have been involved.

An R-Sport agency correspondent said police in riot gear resorted to using water cannons on the raving mob who threw stones, bottles and glass at the officers.

The new clashes erupted just hours ahead of England’s match with Russia at the Velodrome stadium in the French port city, on the second day of UEFA’s Euro 2016 tournaments.
