The US and the EU have decided to enhance their cooperation in the fight against terrorism. During a meeting with German Internal Minister Thomas de Maizière, US Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson noted that after the terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels, Europe has demonstrated a growing commitment to fighting terrorism, Die Welt wrote.

At the same time, Johnson's words sounded more like criticism, than praise, the German newspaper wrote. According to Die Welt, praising the increased willingness of Europe to combat terrorism, Johnson implicitly criticized the fact that earlier the EU lacked such determination.

"Now everything should be better. Johnson has assured de Maiziere that his ministry would assist [Germany] in the identification and apprehension of terrorist fighters traveling abroad. In addition, the US Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Ministry of the Interior plan to enhance their cooperation in the field of cybersecurity," the article said.

From Refugees to Cold War II: Europe Pays the Price for US Adventurism
Before the Paris terrorist attacks, as result of which 130 people were killed, the German government considered it unlikely that terrorists could enter Europe disguised as refugees. However, at least two of the perpetrators arrived in Paris along the Balkan route exactly this way.

According to the newspaper, the US first watched the confidence of German Chancellor Angela Merkel with respect, especially when she refused to set higher limits for the adoption of migrants and assured that Germany "will get through this."

However, the fact that other European countries have increasingly abandoned her open-door policy and followed a tougher approach to the migration crisis demonstrated a failure of the EU and Berlin's growing isolation.

"Ultimately, this is about a ‘chaotic handling of the crisis' in Europe and Merkel's decreasing influence on EU policy. Especially the fact that hundreds of thousands of people were able to get into Germany without any registration has surprised Americans who always think about their safety and sovereign border regime," the newspaper wrote.

Europe has been beset by a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing their crisis-torn countries of origin to escape violence and poverty. In the context of the crisis, Merkel's popularity has significantly declined due to her open-door policy toward refugees. As a result, more than one million refugees have arrived in Germany from African countries and the Middle East, raising security concerns among country's residents.
