Thousands Expected to Take Part in Moldova 'Immortal Regiment' March
VILNIUS (Sputnik) — The residents of largest Lithuanian cities are expected to host the ‘Immortal Regiment’ march honouring the Victory Day on May 9, its organizers said Thursday.

The Immortal Regiment is a patriotic initiative that commemorates those who fought against Nazi Germany during World War II in marches held across Russia and other countries on May 9, celebrated as Victory Day in Russia and the former Soviet republics. During the marches, people carry photographs of their ancestors who participated in the war.

"Unfortunately, thousands of people, who participated in the war, died. But they have every right to have a celebration. That's why we are joining to the Immortal Regiment action in an orderly manner. We will take highly-valued photographs and will go out in the city," Anfijan Antonov, who chairs Klaipeda's Veterans Council, said, as quoted by baltnews website.

Citizens of country's capital of Vilnius will also organize the march that will end at Antakalnis Cemetery, according to the organizers of the march.

Lithuania, which used to be a part of the Soviet Union, was occupied by Nazi Germany during the war. More than 80,000 of Soviet soldiers were killed in battles, while liberating the Baltic republic.
