Migrants at a camp on the Greek island of Lesbos pelted Greek Migration Minister Yannis Mouzalas with water bottles and threw stones at police on Tuesday, local media reported.

ATHENS (Sputnik) — According to the Protothema newspaper, Mouzalas' visit to the camp turned violent after verbal attacks on the part of refugees protesting the conditions in the camp and their planned return to Turkey.

Police stepped in following the attack on Mouzalas and was subsequently pelted with stones. Unrest spread throughout the camp, and police forces are trying to stop the clashes and prevent them from going beyond the camp.

Representatives of non-governmental organizations have been evacuated from the camp, and police special forces are preparing to carry out an operation to restore order, the newspaper reported.

The violence in the camp was reportedly triggered by an incident which took place earlier in the day between two groups of migrants and refugees of Syrian and Afghan origin following a notification on over 400 asylum applications being rejected in Greece.
