The Russian Foreign Ministry urged the parties to the Karabakh conflict to "reject any kind of violence" amid the aggravation of the situation.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Moscow urges the parties to the Karabakh conflict to show restraint and to immediately stop violence, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Saturday.

"We call on the parties to show restraint, and to immediately reject any kind of violence," Zakharova said, commenting on the aggravation of the situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh area, disputed by Armenia and Azerbaijan.

On Saturday, Baku and Yerevan traded blame for breaching the truce in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and reported about intensified fighting in the area.

The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan began in 1988, after the predominantly Armenian Nagorno-Karabakh autonomous region announced its secession from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. Nagorno-Karabakh proclaimed its independence in 1991, prompting a war that lasted until a Russia-brokered ceasefire was signed in 1994.
