LONDON (Sputnik) — The United Kingdom will increase the number of armed police officers serving in its forces in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels, UK Prime Minister David Cameron said Friday.

"We are increasing the number of specially trained armed officers up and down the country to make sure the police have greater capability to respond swiftly and effectively should they need to do so," Cameron said at the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, as quoted by the ITV broadcaster.

The British prime minister added that the decision was made after analyzing what UK law enforcement could do to protect people from terrorist threats similar to the November 2015 Paris attacks.

Some 1,000 additional police officers will be stationed across England and Wales by 2018, as well as 40 extra armed response vehicles, according to London.

In the aftermath of the terror attacks in the French capital, which claimed the lives of 130 people, Cameron pledged to allocate some $204 million over the next five years to increase the United Kingdom’s armed response capability and capacity.
