Half of Belgians Back Closing Country's Borders to Refugees

A recent survey revealed that nearly a half of Belgians favours the closure of the country's borders to refugees to prevent possible terrorist threat.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — Every second Belgian believes that closing the country's borders to refugees would be an appropriate measure to prevent terrorist activities in Belgium, a survey revealed Friday.

According to the survey conducted by the "Ceci n'est pas une crise" foundation, half of Belgians believe that refugees, Muslims and terrorists are essentially all the same. In addition, every fourth respondent said they believe representatives of the Muslim community are terrorist accomplices.

The survey was carried out between March 24-27. The foundation interviewed 1,034 Belgian citizens for the poll.

Belgium has seen an escalation of terror-related incidents since the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris.

Two suicide blasts ripped through the departures hall of Brussels Airport in the northeastern municipality of Zaventem on March 22. A further explosion occurred at the Maelbeek station near the headquarters of the EU institutions. A total of 31 people, including 3 suicide bombers, died in the attacks. More than 300 were injured.
