EU Aviation Security is Still Some Way From Being Fixed
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The purpose of the extraordinary meeting of the EU Commission Committee for Civil Aviation Security (AVSEC) on Thursday was to analyze how terror attacks, such as the one that hit Brussels last week, could be prevented in future, a source in the European Commission told Sputnik.

Last week, at least 35 people were killed and some 300 injured in two explosions at Brussels’ Zaventem airport and a blast in the city’s subway station Maelbeek. After the attacks, the AVSEC EU Committee held an extraordinary meeting with the aim of reviewing security measures applied at landslide areas of EU airports.

"The objective of this meeting was to take stock of the recent events in Brussels and discuss how such attacks could be prevented in the future," the source said.

During this meeting, the importance of intelligence-sharing and law enforcement in thwarting terrorist attacks was further recognized. "This information should be shared with transport authorities and operators as appropriate," the source said.

The commission also pledged to facilitate a more systematic exchange of experience and best practices on security approaches to protect airports.

The source added that EU Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc would further discuss the issue with EU transport ministers at the upcoming informal Transport Council on April 14-15.
