MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Nearly half of the British population believes that Prime Minister David Cameron should resign if voters back the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union, the latest poll released on Tuesday found.
A so-called Brexit referendum is scheduled to be held on June 23, on Cameron’s pledge to hold the in/out vote after renegotiating the terms of Britain’s EU membership.
An estimated 48 percent of those surveyed by the Ipsos MORI Political Monitor expressed the opinion that Cameron should resign in the event the Vote Leave campaign wins. That compares to 44 percent who thought he should stay on as British prime minister.
The most vocal support for his resignation was voiced among Euroskeptic UK Independence Party (UKIP) backers at 70 percent and opposition Labour Party supporters at 56 percent. Among Liberal Democrats, 38 percent said they would back Cameron's resignation, while that opinion was shared among 34 percent of the ruling Conservatives' backers.
The poll also found the Vote Stay camp enjoying an 8-percent lead. Around 49 percent of the respondents said they would vote to remain part of the European Union, while 41 percent said they would vote to leave.
The survey was conducted by phone among 1,023 adults on March 19-22.
