ATHENS (Sputnik) — According to the Phileleftheros newspaper, the detentions took place at the Larnaca airport.

The Cypriot authorities have provided all necessary information to foreign special services. The special attention is paid to foreigners coming from the island's territories controlled by Turkey as jihadists are expected to penetrate the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus using this way, the publication said.

According to the media outlet, all the suspects have been sent to their countries of origin.

Parts of Syria and Iraq are currently controlled by Daesh group, which is outlawed in many countries including Russia. The group is considered to be one of the main threats to global security.

Turkey is one of the main transit routes used by Daesh militants to come to Europe in order to spread their jihadist activity and propaganda there.
