Earlier in the day, a series of blasts hit Brussels' Zaventem airport and a central metro station, killing at least 34 people and injuring over 200. The Belgian authorities are treating the explosions as part of a coordinated terrorist attack.

"There are several underlying issues that drive radicalization which can lead to criminal acts like those committed in Brussels. One of these issues are problems related to the integration of Europe´s Muslims communities. The other is the prolonged conflict and political instability in the Middle East, which we all bear responsibility for," Afzal Khan, a Labour Party politician, said.

Khan called for combined efforts to ensure a global solution to violent extremism, stressing the complexity of the problem.
