The staff of the European Parliament is not allowed to leave the buildding, a source at the parliament told Sputnik on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The staff of the European Parliament situated in Brussels is not allowed to leave the building due to security concerns following a series of blasts in the Belgian capital, a source at the parliament told Sputnik on Tuesday.

"What I can say is that in the morning the staff had the possibility to come to the office, but now no one is allowed to leave the building because of the situation. It is a dangerous situation, so at the moment no one is allowed to leave the building," the source said.

The source added that the parliament also experienced problems with external communications.

Earlier in the day, two explosions hit Brussels's Zaventem airport, leaving at least 15 people killed in what the authorities say was a terrorist attack.

More casualties are feared amid explosions across several metro stations in central Brussels, as a nationwide terror threat has been elevated to the maximum level and all public transport has been suspended.
